Find something a little suspicious that may need a closer look?

Where to begin? The USJFC had a 200% budget increase to $3m this year, as seen here. I looked at the grants on their website listed for this year, and added up the total to $1,338,030 as you can see from the attached file.

Among these expenses are:
  • $467,000 to cover 2008 and 2009 operating expenses for the Inter-University Center's Japanese Studies (a department at Stanford)
  • $39,464 for Battery Dance Company's "dancing to connect"
  • $30,000 for the "Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources" to hold a conference
  • $22,057 for Columbia University's "Prize for translation of Japanese literature"
  • $15,000 for the "Center for Digital TV and the World"
And many more (see attached).

There is also an additional $1,661,970 not accounted for in the grants for 2010. Judging by the commission's 2009 annual budget report, more than $1m likely went in 2010 to "Administration and Activities".

Unfortunately, it seems like most of those (especially "dancing for connect" ) are pretty lame ways to spend money. This is the Pork that we hear so much about that always means well, but works its way into bills and needlessly adds to costs.

Evidently, our tax dollars went to help some poor guy pass away in a volcano....from the JUSFC budget...
